Career education includes work exploration and work-related opportunities, across the curriculum for all students from primary through to secondary school.

Good practice examples, resources, and tools for effective career education already exist. Through Future Ready, governments, school systems and schools will share, expand and encourage programs and practices that work locally.

Transferable skills

Through the Australian Curriculum which includes the general capabilities, Future Ready aims to develop the skills and attitudes that prepare students for life beyond school by:

  • Supporting teacher capability to help make connections between classroom learning and the world of work.
  • Supporting students to develop career management and navigation skills through work exploration and work-related learning.
  • Providing tools and resources to school leaders and teachers to support conversations with students about post-school options.

Meeting the needs of all students

Our goal is to make sure career education meets the individual needs of every student by:

  • Identifying students' passions and strengths to support future pathway choices.
  • Recognising student diversity to support career aspirations of all students.
  • Facilitating possibilities in career education for rural, regional, and remote students, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, students with disability, cultural and linguistically diverse students, and those from priority cohorts.


Partnerships between schools, parents and carers, employers, training providers, universities and the local community will:

  • Build upon good practice models and celebrate sustainable partnerships
  • Reflect the diversity of employer needs and the many pathways available to school students.
  • Ensure career education places equal value on all pathways.
  • Respond to local community needs.


Career education is flexible in design, content and delivery to ensure it meets the needs of local communities, and exposes students to a variety of employment opportunities and pathways to:

  • Ensure learning experiences are authentic and applicable to post-school life.
  • Use community connections and resources to improve student outcomes and post-school destinations.
  • Actively engage to provide quality, innovative and timely career information, and training options.

Informed and involved

Develop and share understanding of career and education trends by:

  • Promoting school practices that maintain high standards of career education.
  • Supporting tailored and high quality career education through engagement with professional career practitioners.
  • Improved access to education pathways and job opportunities.

Strong evidence base

It's vital to understand student progression to support successful post-school transition. To achieve this means to:

  • Commit to improve the evidence base through quality longitudinal tracking of student destination outcomes.
  • Be responsive to current research and trends to ensure continuous improvement of career education.
